Assignment #1 Prompt, with directions

Assignment #1: The Ways We Lie

You will write and essay of 350 words on this topic: What Lying Means To Me

When deciding what you want to write about, consider some of these questions, and more:
-Respond to Stephanie Ericsson's essay "The Ways We Lie" (pp. 474-481).
-Is she telling the reader that lying is bad? Is she telling readers how to lie? Does she consider lies necessary?
-Why does she introduce each type of lie with a quote?
-Why did she organize her essay by dividing lies into category?
-What role has/does lying play in your life?
-What would our culture be like if everyone told the truth, all the time?
         -Are lies necessary?
-What is the danger of lying: to ourselves and others.
-Think about our classroom discussions to help you come up with your ideas.

You will bring your pre writing to class on 9/19. You will be awarded up to 10 points of the total points for the quality of your pre-writing. I will check them at the beginning of class. Then we will workshop what you have during class. If you miss class, you miss the points.

You will show your rough draft at the beginning on the in-class workshop on 9/17. You will be awarded up to 10 points. Miss class and you lose your points

You must turn in your final draft in the final draft by email before class on 9/22. If you are late, you lose one whole letter grade. If you fail to turn it in before the next class, you will receive no points for the assignment.

Write your essay using Microsoft Word or Pages. Do not use Word Perfect.
